Var human is ok, but you will not be starving for ASI's or feats as a fighter. Sentinel is a great feat to force enemies to focus on you, but you can also use booming blade to punish them for moving. As for spells, you want shield, absorb elements, blur, and mirror image. So what you want are, Shield + Defense fighting style. The returns to AC are increasing as AC increases, this is a big thing to note. If you guys don't have a wizard or knowledge cleric, then you will be the go to guy for investigation, history, and arcana rolls. Message and Prestidigitation are always good choices.ĮK's make great tanks and strength is great (ignore all the dex obsessed ninnies, their DMs ignore grapple rules and incorrectly sub acrobatics for athletics.) And don't dump int because everyone does that. I like Green Flame Blade for one of the cantrips, I'm not taking Booming Blade but you could if you like. There are plenty of other good options so you might want to wait until you know what the rest of the party is playing before you choose. Expeditious Retreat is good for extra speed. If you lack scouts in the party Find Familiar is great (and just in general good for any class). Spell slots are super limited because you're only a 1/3 caster so you in general don't want to use spells that have attack rolls.įor your level 3 spells take Shield, Absorb Elements, and your any school is your choice. For the most part you'll want defensive spells and self buffs. I highly recommend you plan out your spell progression beforehand, save spells are kinda junk before level 10. You're in a nice spot to get plenty of feats with those stats so you may want to plan out your levels ahead of time.
Keep in mind you might want to switch some of those around depending on your racial bonuses, even numbers are preferred but odd ones can be ok if there is a feat you want down the line.
If you want to play Str based I would go: 16, 12, 17, 15, 11, 9 before racials. With your rolls for a Dex based EK I would go: 12, 17, 16, 15, 11, 9 before racial bonuses. Regardless you'll probably want to use a shield, one of the great strengths of the EK is that you can have really high AC and avoid getting hit. Str based gets you slightly higher AC when you can afford plate (one higher) and slightly higher damage with your melee weapons (not ranged). Dex based lets you use a larger variety of weapons with great ranged options although they generally do less damage. I went defence fighting style and took the Fey Teleportation feat at level 4 for a short rest misty step. I have a High Elf dex EK and it's a blast. Your party is gonna love you if you run Bless a lot, too.īest is subjective, play what you think is fun! This gets you the most mileage out of your limited spell slots. 1 out of 6400 if you roll a d4 for each d20. If you're running Bless, that means both d20s need to roll 1s AND you need to get a 1 on your d4, so you're talking of odds of 1 out of 1600.
Keep a spot open for Healing Word.Īll things that should last several rounds thanks to your great Con Saves.Īt that point your con saves will be +7, and you'll do them with Advantage, which means that to fail a dc10 save, your two d20 need to get 1 or 2 each, which is gonna be very unlikely. Firebolt maybe if you wanna shoot things far away.įor your cleric spells, prep things like Bless, Protection from Evil/Good, Shield of Faith, etc. Cantrip, mostly just pick Booming Blade, the others don't really matter. With chainmail and shield, that'll give you 20AC right away.įor your spells, pick defense things like Absorb Elements, Shield, and one other. Pick Defense Style, and use the cleric blessing to make your armor a +1 one. Pick Heavy Armor Master, makes your str18. Make str17 and wis16 with your variant bonus. If so, I'd go Fighter1/Forge Cleric1/Fighter2 and never look at cleric again, keep going down fighter. You said you were limited to phb for races, but can you pick classes from any book? You have so few spell slots, when you cast a spell you want to be sure it'll work, and won't rely on an attack roll or saving throw to take effect.
